Freedom of Information & Subject Access Request Workshop
Join us on 28 November 2025 at 6pm London time for this 1.5 hour training, facilitated by No One Above, and delivered by After Exploitation.
In this workshop you'll learn how you can use FOIs and SARs to make a real impact for your cause and hold public authorities accountable.
Freedom of Information (FOI) requests submitted by both professionals and members of the public have helped uncover injustice and win pivotal legal cases, campaigns and headlines. Meanwhile, survivors of abuse and exploitation have won a number of personal and campaign victories by using Subject Access Requests (SARs) to secure their personal data from agencies such as the NHS, local authorities, police and private companies.
This training covers:
-
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 and how it can support your work
-
Subject Access Requests (SARs)
-
What kind of information you can request through FOIs and SARs
-
How to challenge FOI and SAR rejections
-
How to use FOIs and SARs for impact
Many of our case studies will relate to modern slavery and immigration requests, as After Exploitation is a modern slavery NGO, but can be applied to a wide range of cases. Please note that this workshop is introductory and may not be suitable for people who regularly submit and challenge FOIs/SARs.
About After Exploitation: After Exploitation is a non-profit which uses Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to track down hard-to-reach data on the mistreatment and injustice facing survivors of trafficking and modern slavery in the UK. Their investigations include the first expose outlining the frequency with which survivors of modern slavery are detained under Immigration Powers, wrongful refusals to provide support to survivors, and failures by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) to provide compensation to victims with a legal entitlement to them.
Confidentiality
We understand that confidentiality is essential. On this basis, we ask that this invitation is shared only with Fayed survivors. If you would like to use a pseudonym, please follow these instructions to help you do so. This workshop will be run with care and understanding. Participants are free to take breaks, keep cameras off and engage as little or as much as they would like to. The workshop will be recorded, but the recording will be switched off before the Q&A session at the end of the workshop, allowing survivors to ask questions without being recorded.
Please confirm attendance by registering for the workshop on Eventbrite.
