Consent

A free, informed, enthusiastic “yes” made without pressure, fear, manipulation, or unequal power.

This information is not legal advice – it is meant to signpost information only. Please seek a professional opinion before taking action.

Legal definition

The Sexual Offences Act 2003 states that consent must be given “freely and by choice” with the capacity and freedom to make that choice. Consent is invalid where it is given under coercion, fear, deception, or exploitation.

What it looks like in real life
  • A person going along with something because they are scared to refuse. “

  • Agreement” that happens because of threats, dependency, or grooming.

  • Someone feeling they have no safe alternative.
